A vision for the future,
rooted in a climbing past.

When I began climbing in the 1960’s, many of us had a dream and a shared vision for a new world.

More than fifty years later I still carry that vision. It has also awakened in a new generation of dreamers who see clearly that things can no longer continue as they’ve been. It is time to come together to co-create a civilization that works for everyone and honors our living planet.”

When I began climbing in the 1960’s, I was mostly interested in exploring my physical limits as a climber. But the longer I climbed, the more I realized that at heart, my climbing was as much a spiritual journey as a test of my abilities on rock. All those days in the mountains deepened my connection with Nature and also my belief that each of us has a great personal responsibility for the wellbeing of each other and the planet.

Since retiring from the public schools in 2005, my efforts to create a better world have been local, focused on leading community-driven stewardship efforts in climbing areas in Colorado. During this time I was also immersed in years of research that culminated in the writing of Journey to Civilization, and a newly published book titled Emerging World, which proposes that humanity can only move forward in a sustainable, responsible way through a fundamental shift in consciousness and culture. My current focus, the Planet Project, aims to create a vehicle and spark a movement that supports this shift on a global scale.

The goal for this site is to bring together these diverse but deeply connected lifelong passions for climbing, community building, ecological stewardship, social justice, and growing a more heart-centered, planetary consciousness for humanity. You will find collections of writings and photography both new and old, ranging from climbing essays to two recent books on the history and future of humanity.

You’ll also find an introduction to The Planet Project that aims to co-create a world where all people can thrive and a culture that honors all life.

We also offer a resource list that shares exemplary organizations and leading thinkers who work to support social justice and a sustainable future.

Together, we can be the difference. If any or all of this sounds good to you, then dive in. Join me and many others as we grow a global community and take positive steps together to co-create the world we want. I hope you’ll join a growing community doing this important work.
